Dr. Isabel Santos-Santos
Theoretical Astrophysics and Cosmology
I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (Germany) working in the group of Dr Noam Libeskind. Previously, I was a postdoc at the Institute for Computational Cosmology in Durham University (UK) working with Prof Carlos Frenk, and before then, I was a postdoc in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Victoria (Canada) working with Prof Julio Navarro. I completed my Ph.D. in Astrophysics and Cosmology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain), under the supervision of Prof Rosa Domínguez Tenreiro and Dr Chris Brook.
My research explores the cosmological role played by dwarf galaxies -the least massive but most numerous type of galaxy in the Universe. I use high-resolution cosmological simulations to study how dwarf galaxies form and evolve, with particular focus on the Milky Way's faintest satellites and the dwarf galaxies of the Local Group. My ultimate goal is to answer one of the most fundamental questions in modern physics: the nature of dark matter.
